Take a trip on the Underground railroad…
The Underground Railroad has been an integral part of North American history for well over 150 years. It refers to the efforts of many who assisted persons held in bondage, to escape from slavery. One of the significant last stops of the Underground Railroad journey was here in North Buxton, the site of the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum. The Buxton settlement was Ontario’s largest and most successful of all the planned settlements that were established in Canada. Many descendants inhabit this small but quaint community today.
Here you will learn more about those heroic enslaved people who escaped bondage in the United States and found freedom in Buxton. You will hold original shackles that were worn by slaves who travelled on ships as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. You will walk the land that was cleared by those that were enslaved but made free after arriving here.
Since Blacks were denied an education in the south, the Buxton schools provided a classical education which included, reading, writing, arithmetic plus Greek and Latin. You will have an opportunity to experience some of this classical education as you step back in time into an 1861 school that was built by that first generation removed from slavery. Your lessons will be strict; you will be using a slate, practice your writing skills with a straight pen and participate in recess activities.
Your class experience will end with a soul food lunch and libation ceremony.
Maximum of 30 participants.
